I needed to print an urgent document and my black cartridge needed replacing. So I changed the colour of the text to Gray80 and it printed fine. This wasnt an attempt to reduce my ink consumption by 20 it was done in full knowledge of how an ink jet printer works. Grey is a composite colour it is printed using the 3 colours in the colour cartridge unlike black that has its own cartridge. Grey is not an inksaved black in fact using a grey uses more ink as you have to set down cyan yellow amp magenta. Not as much as you would need to set down to achieve a black you can achieve a black using the colour cartridge but it is not a pure black more of a very very dark brown. Printing on both sides of the paper also known as twosided or duplex printing is an option on many laser printers.
